Large Displays up to 100 mm Digit Height

Large displays with digit heights up to 100 mm cover reading distances of up to about 20 meters and thus the great majority of industrial weighing points. Compact housings, straightforward wall mounting and considerably less expensive than the larger classes. The displays are connected to a weighing indicator or weight transmitter.

Large displays up to 100 mm digit height: which distances this class is intended for

As a rule of thumb, an LED digit can be read safely from about 200 times its height. This gives the following guide for this category:

• 25 to 40 mm: workstation, filling table, test station, reading distance up to about five to eight meters
• 60 mm: weighing point at some distance, floor scale in the workshop, up to about twelve meters
• 100 mm: length of a hall, loading dock, filling station, up to about twenty meters

Measure the actual path from the eye to the display, not the floor area. The diagonal from the forklift cab to the wall above the door is usually longer than the imagined distance across the floor. With dust, steam, backlight or an oblique view, choose the next size up.

If 100 mm is not enough, for example for vehicle scales, outdoor sites or reading across the entire hall, you need the larger digit heights from the overview of large and remote displays.

Why not simply take the largest display

Bigger is not automatically better, for four reasons.

The housing grows too. Six digits at 100 mm digit height already make a wide device that needs a suitable wall area and a clear line of sight. With displays of the next class, mounting becomes a design task with a bracket and a structural check.

At short distances, large digits are restless. Anyone standing two meters in front of a very large display has to move their eyes instead of taking in the value at a glance. For a workstation, 25 to 40 mm is more comfortable than 100 mm.

The price rises considerably with digit height. In this class, the budget for one very large display often buys you two devices.

Which brings us to the fourth point: two displays are often a better solution than one large one. If the value is read at two locations, for example at the control panel and at the loading dock, mount a 100 mm display wherever people look. Several displays can be operated in parallel on one RS485 line. The result is easier to read and usually less expensive than a single large device in the middle of the hall.

Mounting in this class

The advantage of the compact designs shows during installation. Wall mounting is possible with standard fasteners, as is mounting on columns, posts or on a bracket in the line of sight. Even a suspended arrangement above a traffic route remains manageable, although clearance height and secure fastening must of course be checked.

Make sure there is no window or hall door behind the display, because backlight impairs readability more than digits one size smaller. For wet and outdoor areas, choose a version with a suitable protection rating.
