Frequently asked questions
Which flow measuring principle suits my medium?
Turbine and gear meters measure mechanically and suit clean, lubricating liquids. Electromagnetic and vortex meters work without moving parts and tolerate more contamination; electromagnetic meters require an electrically conductive medium. Gases call for designs of their own, because density and compressibility come into play. Solids content, viscosity and temperature decide the choice – not the nominal flow alone.
What is a flow switch?
A flow switch reports whether anything is flowing at all, rather than measuring a quantity. Typical uses are dry-running protection for a pump or monitoring a cooling circuit: if the flow stops, the switch shuts the system down. Where a quantity is dosed or invoiced, a meter or transmitter is needed instead.
Why are flow sensors often only available on request?
Because the sizing depends on the medium, the pipe diameter, the pressure and the temperature range, and a catalogue price would usually be misleading. Send the medium, the flow range, the pipe size and the operating pressure to office@octogon.org and you will get a concrete proposal with price and delivery time.
